Mission Statement

The mission of our foundation, Friends of Humanex Academy, is to support the students and staff of Humanex Academy by raising funds for scholarships for low income students and for classroom educational materials to enhance the learning environment for all students.

Purpose

The non-profit foundation, Friends of Humanex Academy, and the for-profit alternative school, Humanex Academy, have similar missions. Humanex Academy, in its for-profit form, strives to provide “a caring, well-structured learning environment where academically, socially, and/or emotionally needy students can develop the necessary skills to become productive citizens. The the mission for the non-profit foundation, Friends of Humanex Academy, is to enhance the excellent educational programs at Humanex Academy and to provide scholarship opportunities for low income students to attend Humanex Academy. In other words, Friends of Humanex Academy focuses on making Humanex Academy more accessible to at-risk teens from low income families. These efforts will benefit not only individual students and their families, but can also have a positive impact on our community as a whole.

The Goal of Friends of Humanex Academy is to raise money from individuals in our community as well as from foundations to support our mission.

Non-Discrimination Clause

Friends of Humanex Academy follows the same non-discrimination clause as Humanex Academy: “Friends of Humanex Academy does not discriminate against any student because of race, creed, ethnic or national origin gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

Friends of Humanex Academy Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of Friends of Humanex Academy has the same members who were on the Humanex Academy Board of Directors. As a foundation of Humanex Academy, our focus as the Board of Directors for Friends of Humanex Academy is to raise money for our Erin McKenzie Scholarship Fund for scholarships so at-risk students from low income families can attend Humanex Academy. Board members are also expected to promote Friends of Humanex Academy to whatever degree possible and to help insure the continuity and enthusiasm of the board.

The Board of Directors is a non-compensation board. They will not get compensation for their membership or work on the board. The officers will also not be compensated for their time. The aim of the board is that 90% of all funds raised go to scholarships and classroom materials. Ideally, operation costs, such as a private consultant for grant writing, printing costs, and fundraising activities, will be less than 10% of all foundation expenses.

Fund-Raising and Other Activities

Money is raised through various fundraising activities throughout the year. Our biggest regular event is the annual fund raiser held in November and December of each year. We have a base of donors who have come from friends, current students, Humanex alumni, parents of alumni, and community members and who have supported scholarships for several years.

We also have grant writing going on throughout the year. Foundations are our largest contributors. The grant writer for Friends of Humanex Academy estimates that 80% of the foundations which supported the efforts of Humanex Academy will consider future grant applications from Friends of Humanex Academy.

Determination of Scholarships

Scholarships from Humanex Academy are administered through The Erin MacKenzie Scholarship Fund which was created in the spring of 2001 to honor a Humanex Academy student who died of a sudden and unexpected illness. The Erin MacKenzie Scholarship Fund will be continued under Friends of Humanex Academy and will be managed as follows. Scholarships are awarded based on an analysis of each applicant’s family’s financial need. Parents must supply personal financial statements, W-2s, and personal income tax statements for the past two years, as well a statement of personal circumstances. The Board of Directors then takes into consideration the amount of money available, the number of applicants requesting assistance, and the financial circumstances of each student.

Educational Services of America also grants additional scholarships to help supplement low-income students based on the recommendations of the Friends of Humanex Academy Board of Directors.

Conclusion

Friends of Humanex Academy looks forward to continuing to make Humanex Academy’s great programs available to more at-risk teens in the local community.
