Extensive Counseling Support at Humanex Academy

The counseling program at Humanex Academy is a core component of our long-term success with students. Humanex Academy’s counselor has a strong eclectic background which leads to his success in supporting students with a variety of needs. Our first and current counselor, David Miller, has more than twenty years experience working with students whose needs fall outside of the mainstream educational approach.
David is able to adjust to each student’s needs and counsel them, not just from one framework, but from several. The success of Humanex Academy’s counseling program is due to this availability of many different types of counseling procedures. One example is Humanex Academy’s solid crisis management counseling component. Our counseling program uses tested theoretical frameworks in which to handle crisis and conflict resolution. In addition, our counseling staff and counseling interns are constantly working to help our students gain the skills to be independent problem solvers.
Humanex’s counselor is the primary staff member who makes sure everyone is on the same page as teachers work with each individual student. He acts as a liaison between the teachers, students, parents, administrative staff, and outside resource people who also work with the students. To help our students both graduate from high school and gain positive coping skills, Humanex Academy staff must be able to understand why we all react in certain ways and how to adapt our approach to best serve each individual student. A large piece of the counselor’s duties includes a solid understanding of diagnosis procedures and the ability to create individual treatment plans in order to help each student grow.
Individual counseling is offered to all our students on an as-needed basis. All long-term mental health needs are additionally referred to outside therapists, all of whom have a proven record of success with their clients. We offer group counseling with all students and specified issue group counseling sessions as needed. The counselor is also trained in first aid and has knowledge regarding appropriate psychotropic medication. Finally, Humanex’s counselor works with each student to build self-esteem, to learn how to successfully self-advocate, and to develop transition plans for all students whether they graduate from Humanex or return to the public school environment for their last years of high school. Our counselor also has strong training in career counseling as helping students transition successfully to career life after high school has always been part of Humanex’s approach.
