Career and Personal Development (CPD) is both a focus of our program and a class at Humanex Academy. CPD starts in Family Group class. Students of every grade work with their family group teachers each year to develop academic, social/emotional and career-related goals that they will work to achieve. Teachers then create specific benchmarks for those goals; create activities to build student knowledge and skills related to the goals; and check in weekly to see how students are progressing. These Personal Education Plans form the foundation of our focus on student growth. To further facilitate each student’s development we have quarterly reviews, which are an opportunity for students to reflect with teachers on the previous quarter, receive valuable advice and insight from the teachers, and to express some of the issues they may be having.
Humanex offers academic credit for holding a part-time job and for community service or volunteering in order to encourage students to investigate various careers. Students are also allowed to take college courses while at Humanex and receive high school credit. This allows students who might be anxious about what a college class is like to take the class while they receive the support they need from Humanex.
Career and Personal Development is also a required course taught by Humanex Academy’s counselor to all seniors. Its purpose is to help students improve themselves in the present and prepare for the future. Many students use this class as a starting point for investigating college. Our counselor works with the student to select colleges, prepare for the ACT or SAT, write college essays, and complete college applications. Students who are pursuing vocational training use this class to find and secure an internship or apply to a vocational school.
Students who attend Humanex are fully prepared to walk whatever avenue of life they choose after completion of high school. They have learned, practiced and mastered the skills they will need to be successful citizens after high school, in part because of Humanex’s Career and Personal Development program.
